Crohn's sufferer, Phoebe's ball raises over £15,000 for charity

Phoebe Murray encapsulates what I think #IBDSuperHeroes really are, and should aspire to be. You may have recently seen updates over on the Cure Crohn’s Colitis Facebook page about the fundraising efforts of Phoebe, and her family and friends.

She was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at the tender age of 11 and has experienced things that healthy people, of any age, could not even imagine, including multiple invasive procedures and 16 weeks of no food.

Phoebe’s previous fundraising activities in 2016 had already raised thousands for Cure Crohn’s Colitis, but, that wasn’t enough! With the support of her family and friends, the idea for Phoebe’s ball was born.

She had the support of the local media in the run-up to the charity ball, with coverage in The daily record and DnG24.

Phoebe’s mum Audrey commented: “The idea is to raise awareness and funds for a cure for this horrible disease as well as for Phoebe’s ice-skating club where she is well supported and spends a lot of her time doing something she loves. She’s not long back from the British championships with a silver medal, which is great.

The ball, which was held on March 3rd, 2018 at Easterbrook Hall was a huge success, and raised over £15,000 which will be split between Cure Crohn’s Colitis and Solway Synchronised Skating Club. You can find further coverage of the event here

I managed to quickly catch up with Audrey who sent me a gorgeous picture of Phoebe and Ivor, Cure Crohn’s Colitis founder from the evening.

Audrey said: “Phoebe, myself and her sister Amber can't thank people enough for the support they have given us in all of the events we've organised. Our friends and family, along with our extended skating family have all been amazing and we thank each and every one of them from the bottom of our hearts. As a mum, I am desperate to raise funds to help with research to try and find a cure for this horrible disease. I am so proud of what phoebe has dealt with and how she is coming through the other side.”

If that doesn’t pull on your heartstrings, I don’t know what will!

Ivor also had a wonderful evening, and said that everything was delightful! Every conceivable need had been catered for and he was "immensely impressed."

I have only read about Phoebe’s fundraising activities online, but the young lady, her friends and her family make me really proud. A huge well done is very much deserved to all involved for making the evening a fabulous success!

That’s what #IBDSuperHeroes is all about; taking something positive from the negative you’ve been dealt. Using that pain and frustration and channelling it into something that can, one day, prevent others facing the same!
